  Our Mission Statement

Summit Steel Works sees your most difficult projects as challenges to be mastered. We love the jobs that other steel contractors shy away from - in fact, this is where we shine! From simple embeds to the most complex curved stair assemblies that qualify as AESS, Summit Steel Works is committed to helping our customers with all their metal needs.

Company History

From Bungees to Structural Steel

Summit Steel Works is dedicated to being the best in metal design and fabrication, but the story really begins with a bungee cord. ... A very long bungee cord. Peter Kockelman, president of Summit Steel Works, began his career with Litton Guidance and Control Systems in 1986 after graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. However, within two years he and Nikki joined up with his brother to start Bungee Adventures, the first bungee jumping company in the US. The two brothers appeared in commercials for Reebok, General Motors, and Tostitos, and made numerous television-show appearances. Their first custom creation was a human slingshot that used bungee cords to propel two passengers 150 feet into the air, an invention granted a US patent in 1992.

Gravity Works Ejection Seat
Gravity Works Ejection Seat

That first steel amusement ride, named the Ejection Seat, was followed by a second more refined ride called the Sky Scraper. With the new ride design, Ian Gravina joined the team and the company name was changed to Gravity Works, which better suited their new amusement ride business. Gravity Works Corp. would go on to produce over 30 high-thrill amusement rides that both terrified and thrilled riders from Brazil to England. However, after the attacks of September 11, 2001, worldwide amusement ride sales evaporated and the company was sold to Mathew Lawrence and Great Canadian Bungee. It was at this time that Summit Steel Works was formed—in the same location—by Peter and Nikki Kockelman and Ian Gravina.

New Company, Same Enthusiasm for Great Engineering (and Adventure)

Within its first 6 years of operation, Summit Steel Works grew 650% and expanded to include a total of 30 dedicated employees, including six mechanical engineers. Combining our commitment to service with state-of-the-art tools, such as Pro/ENGINEER, a sophisticated 3-D CAD software package, Summit Steel Works has taken the design/build world by storm. Our mastery of leading design software allows us to detail and build the most complex metal assemblies.

Today, Summit Steel Works is one of the top design/build miscellaneous metals companies in Northern California. We are pre-qualified with 90% of the largest commercial contractors in Silicon Valley (a growing list), and are preparing for further growth in revenue and stature as we transition into our new 25,000 square foot facility late in 2011. We love our work and we are still having a lot of fun doing it! Nobody's jumping off our creations any more (we hope ...), but the same passion that was a part of Bungee Adventures still infuses our work.
